Menopause and WLS
Your female organs can get really screwed up but depending on your age you don't know for sure. There is a blood test they can do to confirm if you are in menopause or not- you should ask for that next time you have lab work done.
It is kind of tricky, to know if menopause would have happen for me anyway.
I was 51 years old when I had WLS and still had a regular period.
After surgery I had it almost non-stop for the first four months. I went to the GYN and they thought it was due to the WLS- they did a bunch of ultrasounds and other test as well. They wanted to put me on birth control pills or estrogen to regulate my cycle. My surgeon nixed that saying that sometimes that can stunt the weight loss so, I struggled.
As mysteriously as the bleeding started it STOPPED cold turkey.
Anyway, I am 20 months post-op now and have had only one period since all of the testing was done. So, I guess six months after surgery or so I did go through menopause ?

I will be 50 in May and have had 4 months of very confusing periods. I will have my lap band placed in two weeks. I was thinking of trying the Mirena IUD because it is supposed to help perimenopausal irrigularity with it's progesterone content. But I don't want that placed if it might interfere with weight loss. I'll just live with it I guess. And then it sounds like the WLS itself can affect our cycles. So who knows what will happen. I'm just happy mine is nearing the end. Any stressor, and WLS is obviously a stressor can really affect the menstrual cycle.
Hi Debra! Have I got wonderful news for you! I'll be 52 pn the 26th, and am now 18 months out. Several months after WLS, my periods were prolonged and way heavy. Also localized ovary pain, which turned out to be two fibroids and a polyp. My amazing Gyno lady suggested Mirena IUD, and after hearing all the positives, I had it inserted a week later last April. Had a couple weeks of spotting, although haven't bled since July!! :) I continued diligently following my eating and exercise program, and had continued losing weight toward attaining goal also in July. I've since maintained, although l still osing inches. The Mirena IUD has such a low doseage of progestin, (not progesterone) which has proven effective without weight gain. I highly recommend it for any gal with perimenopause issues, short of being fortunate enough to get a vaginal hysterectomy! Best wishes to you as you go forward with your decision. Take care of you! Patti
Never let your memories be greater than your dreams.
I had my WLS in 2005 at the age of 49. For the year before my surgery my periods had gotten progressively lighter and further apart. After my rny they stopped completely.....or so I thought. 3 months afterwards it was back with a vengeance. I will be 52 in May and my periods are now the heaviest they have ever been.....and come every three weeks. Uteruses ought to come with a freaking OFF switch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
